If you are installing an aftermarket air fuel ratio gauge or want to log and monitor your AFR mixtures through your aftermarket ecu you will need to fit the sensor into your exhaust. These are also great to install if you plan to have your car tuned as it makes the tuners life so much easier to just screw his sensor into your exhaust system.
